二、阅读理解

He met her at a party. She was outstanding; many guys were after her, but nobody paid any attention to him. After the party, he invited her for coffee. She was surprised, so as not to appear rude, she went along.

As they sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything and she felt uncomfortable. Suddenly, he asked the waiter, “Could you please give me some salt? I'd like to put it in my coffee."

They stared at him. He turned red, but when the salt came, he put it in his coffee and drank. Curious, she asked, "Why salt with coffee?" He explained, "When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked playing on the sea. I could feel it salty, like salty coffee. Now every time I drink it, I think of my childhood and my hometown. I miss it and my parents, who are still there."

She was deeply moved. A man who can admit that he's homesick must love his home and care about his family. He must be responsible. She talked too, about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was the start to their love story.

They continued to date. She found that he met all her requirements. He was tolerant, kind, warm and careful. And to think she would have missed the catch if not for the salty coffee! So they married and lived happily together. And every time she made coffee for him, she put in some salt, the way he liked it.

After 40 years, he passed away and left her a letter which said:

My dearest, please forgive my life-long lie. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous that I asked for salt instead of sugar. It was hard for me to ask for a change, so I just went ahead. I never thought that we would hit it off. Many times, I tried to tell you the truth, but I was afraid that it would ruin everything. Sweetheart, I don't exactly like salty coffee. But as it mattered so much to you, I've learn to enjoy it. Having you with me was my greatest happiness. If I could live a second time, I hope we can be together again, even if it means that I have to drink salty coffee for the rest of my life.

Put your car keys away and forget about your travel pass — it's time to do a bit of walking.

National Walking Month is organized every May by Living Streets, an organization that campaigns for the rights and the needs of pedestrians — indeed, the organization was previously known as the Pedestrians' Association. The association's aim is to make streets safe, attractive and enjoyable spaces for people to live, work, shop and play. By putting people (rather than vehicles) first, Living Streets wants to create streets and spaces where people feel happier, healthier and more sociable.

The annual campaign gives participants a great opportunity to experience the many virtues(优点)of walking. These include the physical health benefits of becoming fitter; the environmental advantages of not using vehicles(车辆); the joy of local discoveries seeing more of your local area on foot; the enjoyment of walking with other people, whether family, friends or work colleagues and finally the stress relief that comes from walking—walking can clear your head.

Walk to School Week, 19 to 24 May, is part of the month's activities and its aim is to encourage parents to send children to school on foot, rather than take them in the car or let them use public transport. The movement was started in 1995 with only five participating schools and now two decades later, more than one million children take part.

Similarly, there is Walk to Work Week, 12 to 16 May, where grown-ups are encouraged to walk. In the morning, getting off the bus a stop early or parking a few streets away is a good way to add more steps to the daily total. And during the working day, rather than having lunch at the desks or in the canteen, take a walk and get some fresh air. Walk home with your workmates and chat away about everything under the sun but work!

五、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Home on the Way

People need homes. Children assume their parents’ place as home. Boarders call school “home” on weekdays. Married couples work together to build new homes and travelers have no place to call “home”, at least for a few nights. 66.? Don’t they have the right to a home? Of course they do.

Some regular travelers take their own belongings like bed sheets, pillowcases and family photos to make them feel like home no matter where they are. Some stay for long periods in the same hotel and as a result become very familiar with service and attendants. 67..Furthermore, driving a camping car during one’s travels and sleeping in the vehicle at night is just like home—only mobile!

And how about keeping relationships while in transit(运输中)? 68. . Some send letters and postcards, or even photos. Others may just call and say Hi just to let their friends know that they’re still alive and well. People find ways to keep in touch. Making friends on the way helps travelers feel more or less at home. 69..

Nowadays, fewer people are working in their local towns, so how do they develop a sense of belonging? Whenever we step out of our local boundaries, there is always another “home” waiting to be found. 70. , we can make the place we stay “home”.

A. Hostels provide a clean safe place to stay while you are travelling the world

B. Others may simply put some flowers by the hotel window to make things more homely

C. Backpackers in youth hostels may become very good friends, even closer than siblings (兄弟姐妹)

D. So how about people who have to travel for extended periods of time

E. No matter where you go in the world, hotels are there, too

F. Some keep contact with their friends via Internet

G. Wherever we are, with just a little bit of effort and imagination

With computers widely use in many fields, more and more people now type everything on the computer instead of write on paper, that has caused the level of students’ handwriting skills to drop sharp.

Some think handwriting contests are not necessary because we are in the computer age and we type more on the computer than writing by the hand. Beside, writing on the computer is quicker than writing on paper, and the printing words are more standard and beautiful.

Other think it’s necessary to hold such contests. For one thing, it can improve students’ handwriting skills and developed their interest the art of calligraphy. For another, it can make students love Chinese characters.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Will you help the old when they fall down on the street? A recent survey from our class meeting shows that eight percent of the students think they are sure to help the old who fall on the street because saving life is the first thing. Fifteen percent of the students say whether they help or not depends on the circumstances. However, five percent of them hold the view that the old shouldn’t be helped. Why not? First, they lack the knowledge of first aid, not knowing how to deal with the situation. Second, they are afraid of getting into trouble.

In my opinion, we should help each other, especially the old people. To respect the old is our best traditions. Everyone will become old, and if such a case occurs to us one day, I will say I need your help. Thank you!
