I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as Mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk”, he said, “is for Elizabeth”.

I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me, she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional” (感情容易激动的). But she lived “on the surface (表现)”.

As years passed and I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive (原谅) me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.

My hope turned to disappointment (失望), the little interest, finally, peace-it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told me, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work, I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside---a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.

Give me an answer, my desk, in any way you choose, Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

There are three branches of medicine. One is called “doctor medicine” or “scientific medicine”. Scientific doctors try to observe sickness, look for logical pattern, and then find out how the human body works. From there they figure out what treatments may work. This kind of medicine is believed to date from the 4th century BC. Although nowadays it is successful, in the ancient this approach(方法) probably did not cure many patients.

The second kind of medicine is called “natural cures” or “folk medicine”, in which less educated people try to cure sickness with various herbs. These folk healers also use observation and logic, but they are not so aware of it. They try things until they find something that seems to work, and then they keep doing that. Folk medicine flourished(兴起) long before the development of scientific medicine and was more successful in ancient times.

The third kind is called “health spas” or “faith healing”. Sometimes this may be as simple as touching the holy man and being immediately healed. Other times, a magician may make you a magic charm, or say a spell(咒语), to cure you. Some religious groups organize healing shrines(圣坛) for the sick. In these places people rest, get plenty of sleep, eat healthy food, drink water instead of wine, and exercise in various ways. They also talk to the priests(牧师) and pray to the gods. If you are feeling depressed or you have been working too hard, going to these places may be just the right thing to make you feel better.

64. The author’s primary purpose in this passage is to_______________.

describe different types of medicine

argue for the importance of medicine in health care

show the important role religion plays in medical treatments

compare the educational background of three different types of patients

The opinion of many engineers is that the architects that designed the New York World Trade Center Twin Towers did a good job in designing the buildings. The buildings were safe from the hazards envisioned (预想到的)at the time. Indeed, they were designed to withstand(经受住) the force of aircraft that might crash into them. They were not however, designed to withstand the effects of the very high temperatures produces by the ignition(点燃)of aviation (航空)fuel carried by the aircraft.

Steel lightly covered with concrete is the main structural part of the towers and steel loses a lot of structural strength when heated to 1100 degrees Centigrade and beyond, as it was. To protect the steel the towers beams were coated with a few centimeters of concrete. That insulation (隔离) was to provide structural state of being complete for at least 1 hour of fire. The towers met that test. The south tower lasted 62 minutes. The north 103 minutes. Tragedy followed when not all could escape before the collapse (倒塌).

Most experts agree that the Twin Towers were very well designed. Many also agree that the people planning the attacks were very knowledgeable and aimed the aircraft at a height that would effect the most damage. The aircraft crash and the resulting fuel fed fires were aimed at about the 90th floor. That was just high enough to insure that the upper floors would weaken with the heat and crack down , dropping into the remaining part of the building.

The mass of the falling top floors created such a falling load that some experts estimate it exceeded (超过) by 5 to 10 times normal bearing loads. The effect was like a giant hammer, each floor contributing more weight to be born by the next floor down .

Were the Trade Towers well designed ? Engineers say yes. But the public refers to the belief that architects will never again design a tall building without considering the effects of terrorist attacks of all potential kinds. That not only includes the ability of the structure to withstand attack but the means to allow the buildings occupants(占有者)to escape in time to survive.

73. Many engineers believe that the Twin Tower was well-designed after September 11 because ____.

A. it could withstand aircraft crashing into it at the moment

B. it could withstand any natural hazards such as earthquake or fire

C. it had an attracting beautiful appearance until they were destroyed

D. They had the miserable honor of being selected as the target of terrorist attack.

74. According to the article, those who designed the tower could have done better if ____.

A. the tower lasted longer after being attacked

B. the tower held stable until all of the people in there managed to escape.

C. The tower can be immune (可避免) to such attacks.

D. They consider more about the effects of the very high temperatures and made duel (决定性的) changes in the structure.

75. The author believed that the Twin Towers ____.

A. were not well-designed

B. were well-designed

C. were good examples for engineers of our time

D. were out of consideration when we talk about engineering later.

The market is a concept. If you are growing tomatoes in your backyard for sale you are producing for the market. You might sell some to your neighbor and some to the local manager of the supermarket. But in either case, you are producing for the market. Your efforts are being directed by the market. If people stop buying tomatoes, you will stop producing them.

If you take care of a sick person to earn money, you are producing for the market. If your father is a steel worker or a truck driver or a doctor or a grocer, he is producing goods or service for the market.

When you spend your income, you are buying things from the market. You may spend money in stores, supermarkets, gas station and restaurants. Still you are buying from the market. When the local grocer hires you to drive the delivery truck, he is buying your labor in the labor market.

The market may be something abstract(抽象的). But for each person or business who is making and selling something, it is very concrete. If nobody buys your tomatoes, it won’t be long before you get the message. The market is telling you something. It is telling you that you are using energies and resources in doing something the market doesn’t want you to do.

Most Chinese people don't understand why some westerners don't eat meat. In China, to eat meat is a sign of wealth. If a westerner doesn't take a bite of their Peking duck, there is something wrong.

But many people in Europe and America choose not to eat meat or fish — they are known as vegetarians. In the US alone there are 12 million vegetarians and 19,000 more people stop eating meat every week.

People often become vegetarians in order to lose weight or eat more healthily. A lot of research has shown that vegetarian diets are healthier than the average western diet. Fried chicken may be delicious to eat, but all that extra fat can damage your heart

There are many other reasons for "turning veggie". It could be that you cannot afford to buy meat. Or maybe you just don't like the taste of it.

A large number of vegetarians choose to give up meat because they believe it is cruel to kill animals for food. They believe many animals are not allowed to live in comfort and, when they are killed, it is carried out in a very painful way.

While some vegetarians are happy not to eat animals, others take it one step further and refuse to eat any animal product. They are known as vegans and will not eat cheese, yoghurt and eggs, or drink milk. Neither will they wear clothes or shoes made from animal skin, such as leather. They say that if it is wrong to kill an animal for food, it is worse to kill it for clothing.

But there are some groups that go even further. Fruitarians believe it is wrong to kill any living plant or animal. Besides refusing to eat meat, they will only eat fruit and vegetables that have not been killed when harvested. This means they cannot take an apple from a tree: they must wait until the apple falls to the ground. Only then can it be considered dead.

59. A lot of ___ choose to give up meat because they believe it is cruel to kill animals for food.

A. vegans B. vegetarians C. fruitarians D. researchers

60. According to the text, what do vegans refuse to do except ________.

A. to eat vegetables B. to eat meat or fish

C. to drink milk or eat eggs D. to wear clothes made from animal skin

61. According to the text, which one of the following is not mentioned?

A. Only in China, there are so many people eating meat.

B. There are many vegetarians in Europe.

C. Vegetarian diets are healthier than the average western diet.

D. There are many reasons for people turning vegetarians.

62. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. Meat is useful for the health.

B. Vegetarians and Fruitarians are not acceptable.

C. Western food and eastern food are different.

D. Vegetarian diets are popular now.

D

Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.

Many roads and places in Singapore(新加坡) are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries — in both the West and the East.

Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus — obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.

Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example, “Base Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay (马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road

A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. This road is called a crescent(月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

63. We learn from Paragraph 1 that _____.

A. the government is usually the first to name a place

B. many places tend to have more than one name

C. a ceremony will be held when a place is named

D. people prefer the place names given by the government

64. What does the underlined phrase “die hard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. Change suddenly. B. Change significantly.

C. Disappear mysteriously. D. Disappear very slowly.

65. Which of the following places is named after a person?

A. Raffles Place. B. Selector Airbase.

C. Piccadilly Circus. D. Paya Lebar Crescent.

66. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Some place names in Singapore are the same as in Britain.

B. Some places in Singapore are named for military purposes.

C. The way Singaporeans name their places is unique.

D. Young Singaporeans have forgotten the pioneers.

No matter how long your life is, you will, at best, be able to read only a few books of all that have been written, and the few you do read should include the best. It is to be expected that the selections will change over time. Yet there is a surprising uniformity(一致)in the lists which represent the best choices of any period.

What are the signs by which we may recognize a great book? The four I will mention may not be all there are, but they are the ones I’ve found most useful in explaining my choices over the years.

Great books are probably the most widely read. They are not bet sellers for a year or two. But they are long lasting ones. Gone With the Wind has had relatively few readers compared to the plays of Shakespeare or Don Quixote. It would be reasonable to estimate that Homer Iliad(《伊利亚特》)has been read by at least 25,000,000 people in the last 3000 years.

Great books are popular, not pedantic(书生气的).They are not written by specialists about specialties for specialists. Whether they are philosophy or science, or history or poetry, they treat of human, not academic problems. They are written for men, not professors. To read a textbook for advanced students, you have to read an elementary textbook first. But the great books can be considered elementary in the sense that they treat the elements of any subject matter. They are not related to one another as a series of textbooks, graded in difficulty or in the technicality of the problems with which they deal.

Great books are always contemporary, the most readable and instructive.

Great books deal with the persistently unsolved problems of human life. There are genuine mysteries in the world that mark the limits of human knowing and thinking. Great minds acknowledge mysteries honestly. Wisdom is strengthened, not destroyed, by understanding its limitations.

67.Which is NOT the standard in the following when evaluating a great book?

A.Although not a best seller, it must be the most widely read.

B.It can be read without much relevant knowledge.

C.Great books are never out of date.

D.Great books will not disappoint you.

68.According to the author, Gone With the Wind is .

A.sure to enjoy a large number of readers in the long run

B.disliked by readers who like Shakespeare

C.not a great book because of the few readers

D.read more often than Don Quixote

69.After reading the passage, we can infer that .

A.different periods have different lists of great books because there are many books for people to choose from

B.if you don’t read an elementary textbook, you may have difficulty in understanding an advanced one

C.Homer Iliad must be a best seller when it came out

D.great books often deal with unsolved problems of human life for the writers have confidence in settling them

70.The best title for this passage is .

A.Great Books in Your Life B.Great Books in Your Specialty

C.How to Find a Great Book D.What Is a Great Book

第二节:短文写作

Nowadays , it is a common phenomenon that more and more high school students open their own blogs on the Internet. For one thing, it can provide a colorful platform to showcase their talent, and it is a way to release their pressure, and all this makes it more and more popular with high school students. But many parents and teachers hold the different view, they think that managing one’s blog will take a lot of time and energy, while this should be used to study which is their main responsibility.

In my opinion, I do approve of this activity. Nowadays the Internet is playing an important and essential role in our life that we can’t ignore its influence. Therefore as high school students of the so-called information age, we need to learn and make the most of this useful tool to communicate and display ourselves. More importantly, opening and organizing an eye catching blog needs various abilities such as writing ,designing, being skillful at computer and so on. Only if we master those abilities can we make a successful blog. As a consequence, we improve ourselves during the procedures of organizing our blogs.

Blog itself is of little harm. It is your attitude towards it that matters. We should take the advantages and avoid some bad effects

第三部分:阅读理解(20小题;每小题2分,满分40)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(ABC

D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

A high school history teacher once told us, "If you make one close friend in school, you will be most fortunate. A true friend is someone who stays with you for life." Experience teaches that he was right. Good friendships are just not easily formed.

It is possible that we simply do not stay in one place long enough for a true friendship to develop. However, there can be no disagreement on the need for each of us to think carefully about-the kind of friendships we want.

To most of us, friendships are considered very important, but we need to have clear in our own minds the kinds of friendships we want. Are they to be close or kept at arm's length? Do we want to share ourselves or do we want to walk on the surface? For some people, many friendships on the surface are quite enough--and that's all right. But at some point we need to make sure that our expectations are the same as our friends' expectations. If one wants more from the friendship than the other, and if this is not talked about, one is likely at last to feel that he's holding the short end of the stick. The sharing of personal experience including

our tears as well as our dark dreams, is the surest way to deepen friendships. But it must be undertaken (进行) slowly and carried on only if there are signs of interest and action in return.

What are some of the difficulties to friendship? The greatest is the attraction to expect too much too soon. Deep relationships take time. Another "major difficulty" is the selfishness (自私)In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches.

In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the work of testing candidates for a master's or doctor's degree.

Generally, however, modern examinations are written. Two types of tests are commonly used in modern schools. The first type is sometimes called an objective test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.

The student has just one test: he must recognize the correct answer and copy its letter or number on his examination paper.

For testing a student's memory of facts and details, the objective test has advantages. It can be scored very quickly by the teacher or even by a machine. In a short time the teacher can find out a great deal about the student's range of knowledge.

For testing some kinds of learning, however, such a test is not very satisfactory. A lucky student my guess the correct answer without really knowing the material.

to think one "possesses" the other, including his time and attention. Similarly, friendships require actions in return, In other words, you must give as much as you take. Finally there is a question of taking care of. Unless you spend reasonable time together, talking on the phone, writing letters, doing things together, friendships will die away.

56. It is not easy for you to make a good friend,

A. but, you have to stay in one place waiting for it

Pearl Carlson was shaken awake at 3:30 a. m. by a forceful pull. King, the family dog, was trying to pull her out of bed, Then she smelled smoke and heard the sound of fire from her parent's room. Still inside, King appeared at Pearl's window, making squeaking (短促尖叫) sounds. When running toward Pearl's bedroom, Fern realized her husband hadn't yet escaped. Do you like to eat out? Do you like to eat quickly? Do you like inexpensive food? Some people go to fast-food restaurants for these reasons. In the past, people usually went to diners (小饭馆 )for these reasons, too. In fact, many people in the States still go to diners today for the same reasons.

A man named Walter Scott had the first "diner" in 1872. It wasn't really a diner. It was only a food cart. People on the street walked up to the cart to buy food. These carts served late- night workers who wanted a cup of coffee and a late-night meal. The meal was a sandwich or boiled eggs. In 1887,Samuel Jones built the first diner big enough to allow the customers to come inside. However, they did not sit down. Later, people built diners with counters and stools, and people sat down while they ate.

Before long, many diners stayed open around the clock. In other words, people were able to eat in a diner at any time. Diners changed in other way, too. The original menu of sandwiches and coffee became bigger. It included soup, favorite dishes, and a breakfast menu. In addition, diners soon became permanent buildings. They were no longer carts on wheels.

Diners today look similar to the diners of the early 1900s. They are usually building with large windows. Inside, the diners have shining counters with stools, booths, tables and chairs. People can eat all three meals in a modern diner.

Today, many people eat in fast-food restaurants such as Mc Donald's and Burger King. However, the diner remains an American tradition, and thousands of people still enjoy eating there. It was popular a century ago, and it is still popular today.

D

Years ago, scientists reported a change in the atmosphere (大气) -- a hole, or thinning of ozone (臭氧) in the atmosphere, over Antarctica. Scientists were not sure what was causing it.

Most scientists believe that man-made chemicals are destroying the ozone. But finding the major cause has not helped solve the problem. In fact, experts say the problem seems to be spreading. Scientists also have found signs of ozone loss in other parts of the atmosphere.

Ozone is found both in the air we breathe and in the upper atmosphere. Near the earth, ozone in the air is a danger to life. It is a waste product. But ozone found 10 kilometers to 50 kilometers up in the atmosphere protects life on earth. Ozone forms in the atmosphere through the action of solar (the sun's) radiation. Once formed, the ozone blocks harmful radiation from reaching the earth. Scientists say a reduce in ozone and an increase in the harmful radiation will cause many more cases of skin cancer and will harm crops, animals and fish.

Scientists began to study the condition of ozone in the atmosphere in March 1988. The report said temperatures in the hole are getting colder. It is about eight degrees colder 15 kilometers above earth than it was in 1979. Scientists think the first loss of ozone reduce the amount of solar energy the atmosphere can take in. This cools the atmosphere, increases ice cloud production and leads to more ozone loss.

Another report said that scientists found signs the ozone problem has spread. The study shows that the loss of ozone over the areas with larger population in North America and Europe was at least three times greater than scientists had thought. The ozone levels reduced much more seriously during winter months than in warmer months. This is not surprising, because the amount of ozone in the atmosphere changes with the temperature.

Why has the ozone problem developed? No one knows for sure. An international effort is being made to stop the loss of ozone in the atmosphere. But many experts fear the effort will not produce results fast enough to prevent harm to life on earth.

D. The ozone in the atmosphere can stop harmful radiation from getting to the earth.

B. the temperatures in 1979 are much colder

C. ozone holds on solar energy and helps atmosphere take it in

D. efforts have been made to stop the loss of ozone successfully

E

The oil resources which are left will not last very long. This means that all vehicles such as cars, trains, buses, planes and ships that need oil to work will not be able to run. So it will be necessary to develop a new system of transport which uses a fuel other than oil. Electric vehicles are one possibility. In Britain, most families have at least one car and this car is used everyday. It could be that only one person in the family drives the car to work or for shopping. The number of cars on the road which are almost empty perhaps helps to explain why the oil is used up so quickly. The family car is a very useful form of transport but it is also a great waste of energy, especially if it is compared with buses or trains. Much petrol is used by a car which is traveling at 120 kilometers an hour. Clearly, it would be better if there were fewer cars on the road and more speed limits so that the oil which is left will last as long as possible.

About 25% of Britain' s total consumption (消耗) of energy is domestic--it is used only in the home. Just over 20% is used for transport. Most of the energy is used in industry. It is difficult to suggest any possible energy conservation(保护) in industry because many of the suggestions would mean that some people would lose their jobs. It is important that industry produces the same amount of products

using the same amount of workers.

Obviously, conservation is not going to the answer to the energy crisis. The most it can do is to give more time for a better solution to be found. The more time which is available for new sources of energy to be developed, the better it is because there is still a lot of work to be done in order to find suitable, safe methods of producing energy.

72. In Britain, what reason could help to explain why oil is used up very quickly?

A. People use cars every day.

B. Most families have at least one ear.

C. Many cars on the road are almost empty.

D. People drive their cars to work.

73. Which of the following is true?

A. Compared with buses and trains, the family car is useful and can save energy.

B. A car driving at the speed of 80 kilometers per hour uses half as much petrol as a car traveling at 160 kilometers per hour.

C. It is possible for people to develop vehicles.

D. Limitation of the number of cars on the road and their speed will help the oil last longer.

74. What does the underlined word "domestic' mean in paragraph two?

A. For household use. B. On the road.

C. Slow driving. D. Fast driving.

75. What is better way to solve the problem of the energy crisis?

A. Governments should cut down the number of family cars on the road.

B. The speed of vehicles must be limited.

C. New sources of energy should be found and developed.

D. Factories should cut down on production.

I was so excited to hear that you are coming to visit Beijing this summer vacation. We will have fun together!

I wish our house were bigger so you could stay with us. However, since my aunt and her family are also coming in the summer, I'm afraid the house will be too crowded. I can help you arrange a hotel room. It is not far from my home, so you can come and have meals with us.

Of course I will show you around in Beijing. I'm going to take you to all the famous places of interest in the city such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace. I'm sure you will like them all.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. I'm looking forward to seeing you in Beijing.

55.According to the text, "vegetarians" refer to people who ___.

A. choose not to eat meat or fish B. choose to eat meat or fish

C. choose not to eat protein D. choose to vegetables

56. According to the text, which one of the following is not mentioned?

A. Only in China, there are so many people eat meat.

B. There are many vegetarians in Europe.

C. Vegetarian diets are healthier than the average western diet.

D. There are many reasons for people turning vegetarians.

57. The main idea of the passage: _______.

A. Meat is harmful to health B. Vegetarian diets are popular

C. Food and health D. Meat and health

58. There are many other reasons for "turning veggie". "veggie" refers to ___.

A. vegetable B. vegan C. vegetarian D. fruitarian

Louis Pasteur, the famous French chemist and bacteriologist(细菌学家), invented “pasteurization(加热杀菌法)”. In 1854 Pasteur was made head of the department of science at the University of Lille, and it was there that he made one of his most famous discoveries. Lille was a major center for wine and beer-making, and some of the local wine-makers asked Pasteur if he could help solve the problem of keeping wine fresh. At that time, it was believed that food and drinks go “bad”due to a purely chemical process(变过过程). But during a series of experiments Pasture proved that tiny living organisms(微生物) caused food and drinks to go bad. In the case of wine and beer the organisms are already present in the form. of various yeasts(酵母) that caused the fermentation(发酵) process. Pasteur discovered that heating the wine gently for a few minutes after it had fermented would kill off the yeast that was left in the wine, with the result that the wine would remain fresh for much longer. He also proved that food and drinks could be turned bad by other organisms(有机体) that were present in the air, and that they too would keep fresh much longer if they were kept in airtight(密封的)containers.

The heating process was so successful that it made Pasteur famous. It was named “pasteurization”in his honour, and by about 1900 it had been widely used for processing and bottling cows’ milk. The result was a huge drop in the number of bottle-fed babies dying from infant diarrhea(婴儿腹泻) and from that time on it had been a standard treatment of milk and many other food products. This simple process has saved thousands, possibly millions, of lives worldwide.

Since telegrams are paid by the number of words, that is to say that every word costs money. So people always try to use as few words as possible. Little words like “a”, “an” and “the” disappear. So do all those auxiliary verbs that English students hate: do, does, Is. . . So a news reporter who wanted to know how old a famous film star named Cary Grant was sent her a telegram, saying, “How old Cary Grant?”

Unfortunately, although the little words have gone, nobody knows where they have gone. So the reporter received a reply from Cary Grant which read “Old Cary Grant fine. How you?”

But perhaps the shortest telegram in the English language was from an Irish writer called Wilde. He was living in Paris then and sent a telegram to his publisher in Britain to see what the readers thought of his new book . The message said “ ?”. The publisher sent back a telegram, saying “! ”

A. was against using small words

B. thought it necessary to express one's ideas clearly

C. was for the use of as many words as possible

D. thought the film star and the writer set us good examples

74. People always try to use as few words as possible in telegrams because ______________ .

As a middle school student, I wonder if I should spend all the time on my study. In fact, there are many other things for me to learn, too! By watching TV I can learn about latest news from home and abroad. I can broaden my knowledge from watching TV as well.

You see him run a sprint(短跑) only on camera. Try catching him with your naked eyes in the stadium, and chances are that you will not realize what passed by. The phenomenon called Usain Bolt did it again, albeit this time with the help of three Jamaican teammates.

Spectators in the packed Bird's Nest got what they had been waiting for the whole of Friday evening: Bolt doing his signature sprint and setting another world record.

Bolt ran the third leg, handing the baton to former 100m world record-holder Asafa Powell, yelled and pointed as Powell began the anchor leg.

And within seconds, just past 10 pm, the 4x100m men's relay record of 37.40 seconds lay shattered. Nesta Carter had started the amazing run, passing the baton to Michael Frater. The new record: 37.10 seconds.

Such was their dominance that the Jamaicans were almost a full second faster than silver medalists Trinidad and Tobago, which finished in 38.06 seconds. Japan took the bronze in 38.15.

The applause for the winners was deafening, with the Mexican wave in the stands accompanying the Jamaican team's victory lap on the tracks.

But it was a sad day for Jamaica's women sprinters. The favorites failed in passing the baton (in the third leg) in the 4x100 relay, allowing Russian women to run home with the gold.

Good morning. It's an honor for me to join this distinguished group of leaders from nations around the world. We come together here in Copenhagen because climate change poses a grave and growing danger to our people. You would not be here unless you – like me – were convinced that this danger is real. This is not fiction, this is science. Unchecked, climate change will pose unacceptable risks to our security, our economies, and our planet. That much we know.

So the question before us is no longer the nature of the challenge – the question is our capacity to meet it. For while the reality of climate change is not in doubt, our ability to take collective action hangs in the balance.

I believe that we can act boldly, and decisively, in the face of this common threat. And that is why I have come here today.

As the world's largest economy and the world's second largest emitter, America bears our share of responsibility in addressing climate change, and we intend to meet that responsibility. That is why we have renewed our leadership within international climate negotiations, and worked with other nations to phase out fossil fuel subsidies. And that is why we have taken bold action at home – by making historic investments in renewable energy; by putting our people to work increasing efficiency in our homes and buildings; and by pursuing comprehensive legislation to transform to a clean energy economy.

These actions are ambitious(雄心勃勃的), and we are taking them not simply to meet our global responsibilities. We are convinced that changing the way that we produce and use energy is essential to America's economic future – that it will create millions of new jobs, power new industry, keep us competitive, and spark new innovation. And we are convinced that changing the way we use energy is essential to America's national security, because it will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and help us deal with some of the dangers posed by climate change.

60. In terms of subject matter, this article is a _____.

A. comment B. review C. report D. speech

61. The underlined word “poses” in paragraph 1 probably means _____.

A. brings up B. calls up C. leads to D. adds to

A. what America has done to deal with the issue mentioned.

B. what the world has done to deal with the issue mentioned.

C. what America can do to deal with the issue mentioned.

D. what the world can do to deal with the issue mentioned.

63. According to the article, we know the speaker believes that______.

A. the climate change isn’t threatening human beings.

B. the whole world needn’t work together to face the climate change.

C. his country is taking actions only to meet the global responsibility.

D. his country will benefit much from the settlement of the climate change.

Slang(俚语) is language that is different from the kind of speech that we are taught in school. Slang expresses ideas using new terms, or gives new meanings to old ones. One expert says good slang uses very few words to communicate a log of meaning. Dictionaries say no one is sure4 where the word “slang” itself came from, but some say it dates back to the 1700s.

American slang is born in the everyday speech of different groups. Television, movies and radio spread the new words or expressions to other groups. For example, black culture has given the language expressions such as to “bad mouth,” meaning to criticize someone. Teenage culture produces a lot of slang words, too. One is “mallie,” a person who spends a lot of time in shopping malls. People in business also have created slang expressions. One example is “red eye”, an all-night airplane flight from coast to coast.

Most slang words disappear after a time. The phrase “right on”, for example, was often used in the 1960s and 1970s to mean “that is correct” or “I agree”. Not many people use it these days.

In 1994, University of Tennessee professor Jonathan Lighter published the first book in a series called the Historical Dictionary of American Slang. It gave the meaning of slang words that start with the letter A through the letter G.

Three years later, he published the second book. It begins with H and ends with O. It contains 10,000 entries. These include slang terms that sue names. Some are very unusual. One example is “Monet” after the French painter Claude Monet(莫奈). The word describes someone who looks good from far away but is not as good-looking up close. The book also includes three pages of slang that use the name “Joe”. “Joe Lunchpail” is a working man. “Joe Sad” is someone who has no friends.

64. Which of the following slangs can categorized(分类) into the group of “Monet, Joe lunchpail, and Joe sad”?

A. mallie B. bad mouth C. right on D. red eye

65. According to the article, which of the following is true with “slang”?

A. Slang itself dates back to the 1700s.

B. Television spread slangs most quickly.

C. Most slang words last a long time.

D. Some names as slang words don’t refer to a concrete(具体) person.

66. About Jonathan Lighter, which is Not true?

For more than twenty years scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets. Most of these searches have been done over the radio. The hope is that someone in outer space may be trying to get in touch with us. Scientists also have sent radio and television messages on spaceships traveling through space, on the chance that someone may be receptive to such messages.

Scientists are using powerful radio telescopes to listen to signals from about 1, 000 stars, all within 100 light years of earth. In addition, they will scan(扫视)the entire sky to “listen” for radio messages from more distant stars. Using a computer, they will be able to monitor more than eight channels at one time. Scientists are looking for any signal they stands out from the background noise.

Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy(银河星系), scientists find that five percent are like our sun. Perhaps half of them have a planet like earth. Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the star for temperatures to be right for the evolution(进化)of life. Based on the inhabitable(that can be lived in)planets in our galaxy, most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets support some life.

However, many scientists wonder whether intelligent(有智力的)life exists on other planets. Some believe that twenty years of searching without any intelligible messages shows that no one is out there. They say that the evolution of intelligence comparable to ours is unlikely.

Other scientists believe that our search hasn’t been long enough to rule out the possibility that intelligent life exists in our galaxy. Although our sun family is only about five billion years old, our galaxy is about 20 billion years old. In that time, some scientists think it is likely that civilization(文明)much more advanced than ours have developed. Perhaps these civilizations send us no signals; perhaps we have not recognized the signals they have sent us. If we hope to find intelligent life, these scientists believe that we have to keep looking.

73.According to the passage, how many planets in our galaxy might be inhabitable?

A. 5 billion. B. 10 billion.

C. 15 billion.D. 200 billion

74.The first paragraph in this passage is mainly about ________ .

A. how scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets

B. why scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets

C. where scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets

D. when scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets

75.The underlined word “monitor” in the passage means“ ________ ”.

A. findB. follow

C. check D. form

76.Which of these statements is true based on the information in the passage?

A. The earth is one of the oldest planets in our galaxy.

B. Most scientists believe that there is intelligent life on other planets.

C. Scientists are trying different ways to find signs of life on other planets.

D. Scientists don’t believe that there might be life on other planets.

第二节: 书面表达:

One possible version:

We middle school students have had many tests or exams. We have both achieved success and suffered from failure. Different students take different attitudes to failure. Some fall in low spirits when they don’t do well in the exams. They usually lose heart and no longer study as before. But most students take an active attitude towards failure. They encourage themselves to be self-confident. They try to find out and analyze the causes so that they will no longer make similar mistakes. They often turn to their teachers, classmates or friends for advice. I agree with those with active attitudes. As we all know, failure is the mother of success. Even great men have failed many times before they succeeded. So we must deal with our failure correctly.
