She told me the name of a hospital which was actually on the way to the food store. So I said, " My car is parked nearby. How about my giving you a ride? It will save you some time and money. " She agreed gratefully.

When we got to the hospital, she thanked me again and again. Then I went to the food store and picked up what I went for. Preschool-aged children who can focus on a particular task for an extended period of time have a 50 percent greater chance of graduating from college, according to a new study from Oregon State University.

Observing 430 preschoolers, researchers asked parents to rate(评估)their children based on social and behavioral skills, such as “plays with a single toy for long periods of time” or “child gives up easily when difficulties arose.” Additionally, in order to find out the changes happening on them, the children’s reading and math skills were assessed(评估) at age 7 and again at age 21.

What researchers discovered was that the ability to pay attention and follow directions may be more critical than academic (学业)abilities to overall academic success.

“There is a big push now to teach children early academic skills at the preschool level,” said Megan McClelland, an early child development researcher at Oregon State and lead author of the study, in a news release. “Our study shows that the biggest predictor(预测)of college completion wasn’t math or reading skills, but whether or not they were able to pay attention and finish tasks at age 4.”

Parents whose children rated higher on attention and persistence at the age of 4 had a nearly 50 percent greater chance of completing their college degree by age 25, according to the study. Fortunately, as McClelland noted in the news release, these social and behavioral skills can be taught, and the earlier adults step in to guide the student, the greater chances a child has to succeed academically.

“Academic ability carries you a long way, but these other skills are also important,” McClelland said. “Increasingly, we see that the ability to listen, pay attention, and complete important tasks is crucial for success later in life.”

26. From the passage we know _______.

A. preschool children can focus on things for a long time.

B. preschool children’s performance can reflect their future.

C. the more preschoolers play toys, the more likely they are to succeed.

D. hard working preschoolers are more likely to be admitted into college.

27. Preschoolers observed in the research _________ .

A. just liked playing one toy         B. gave up facing difficulties

C. put academic subjects first        D. would receive at least two assessments

28. Megan McClelland’s words in Paragraph 4 tell us that _________ .

A. preschool children like learning academic skills

B. completion from college requires no math learning

C. the attention-focusing ability contributes to finishing college

D. reading skills can promise preschoolers’ graduation from college

29. The 5th paragraph suggests that ______ .

A. higher persistence increases the chance for children to complete college

B. social and behavioral skills can be taught in later life

C parents should always pay attention to their children’s academic success

D children’s academic success is greatly influenced by social and behavioral skills

30. What does the underlined word “crucial” in the last paragraph mean?

A .important      B. normal     C. irrelative   D. unnecessary

  C

Your action can speak louder than your words. It is important to know another language and how to communicate without words when you are in another country. Before saying anything, people communicate with each other by using gestures(手势). However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world.

In the United States, nodding your head up and down means “yes”, while in some parts of Greece and Turkey, it means “no”. In the southeast of Asia, it is a polite way of saying “I heard you”.

Today in the USA, when someone puts his thumb(大拇指) up, it means “Everything is all right.” However, in Greece it is bad manners to do so. Also putting your clasped(紧握的)hands up above your head means “I am the winner.” It is the sign which players often make. In Russia it is the sign of friendship.

In the USA, holding your hand up with the thumb and index finger(食指)in a circle, and the other three straight means “Everything is OK.” In France, it means “You are worth nothing.”

It is also important to make eye communication. If you look down when talking to an American, he or she may feel that you are shy, or you are trying to hide something.

Besides these, you should also know there are some topics that can not be talked about, such as age, weight and marriage. You can talk about the weather, work, sports, food, where one lives and news of the day.

31. Which of the following is true?

A. People all over the world only communicate by words.

B. Many gestures either have different meanings or no meanings at all.

C. Gestures are the most common way to communicate.

D. People can talk about anything in another country.

32. What does the sentence “Your action can speak louder than your words” in paragraph 1 mean?

A. What you do is better than what you say.      B. You try your best to be polite.

C. You are better understood by your gestures than through your words.

D. What you say is better than what you do.

33. You’d better not put the thumb up in _____.

A. Greece B. the USA C. England D. China

34. In Greece nodding your head means “_________.”

A. Yes       B. No            C. I heard you D. I am the winner

35. The main idea of the passage is that when you are in another country, _____.

A. it is important to know the language.

B. it is important to know what you talk about to a foreigner.

C. to know how to communicate without words is as important as to know the language.

D. to communicate through gestures is more important than to know the language.

第三节 书面表达(满分20分)

My Hobby

Hobbies play an important role in our daily lives. Different people have different hobbies. Reading is my hobby.

I like reading for three reasons. First of all, books introduce me to a new world, which is colorful and without time and space limit. Through reading, I can trace back to ancient Egypt, the cradle of human civilization. It can bring me to the United States, a glamorous land I have been longing to visit. Secondly, reading can broaden my horizons. In the past years, most of my knowledge has been obtained from books. I have learned from many people by reading about their ideas on science, politics and society. Thirdly, reading bridges the gap between my dream and my goal. In order to achieve my dream in the future, I must keep reading. Reading has become part of my life.

In a word, reading can not only broaden our minds but also add more fun to our life.
