On April 18, the 100-day countdown to the 2012 Olympic Games in London began. For this year's Games' slogan, the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games has chosen the phrase “Inspire a Generation” (激励一代人). It is expected to inspire athletes(运动员) to do their best, and common people to do better in their daily lives.
The Games are also inspiring lots of tourists to come to London. But if you go there, you'd better try your best to follow British manners and customs. Otherwise, you'll end up in a right mess! Expert William Hanson has given the Associate Press a few tips for tourists on how to act while in the UK. Let's have a look:
Don't talk about money. According to Hanson, British people hate talking about money and it is considered rude to do so. In particular, never ask anyone about their salary.
Afternoon tea. The traditional view of the British sitting down for an afternoon tea is not exact. Few people keep the tradition nowadays.
Give tips—but not in an obvious way. The British favor a quiet “thank you” gift for good service rather than the rigid 16-20% tip Americans always give. In fact, many British waiters will not feel anxious and nervous if you decide not to tip at all.
Greeting with a kiss. The British are not like their passionate neighbors in France. Many prefer a handshake or a pat on the back to say “hello”.
Conversation tip. If you want to be friendly, end a sentence with the word “mate”.
54. The underlined word “It” in the first paragraph refers to .
A. London
B. “Inspire a Generation''
C. The 100-day countdown
D. The London Organizing Committee
55. British people think it rude to .

C. give a 10% tip to a waiter D. shake hands with friends
56. The underlined word “passionate'' in the passage means “ ” in Chinese.
A. 冷酷的 B. 羞涩的 C. 有激情的 D. 聪明的
57. When will the London Olympics be held?

C. At the beginning of August D. In the middle of July

Table manners are how to behave when you eat a meal. They include how to handle knives, forks and spoons and how to eat in a polite manner. To behave well abroad, you are to know some table manners.
EATING MANNERS
Japan: It is "perfectly" okay to slurp when you eat noodles. Unlike making big noises, slurping slightly is not rude. Japanese also say it tastes better if you slurp.
Russia: Your wrists should be placed on the edge of the table while eating, fork in left hand, and knife in the right. It is not good manners to rest them on your lap. Keep your elbows off the table. Leave some food on your plate to show that the host has given you enough to eat.
France: Never discuss money or religion over dinner. What is different from the manners in Russia is that finishing everything on your plate is considered good manners.
Mexico: Whenever you catch the eye of someone who' s eating, even a stranger, it' s good manners to say "provecho", which means enjoy. In Mexico, dining is more than a meal. It's a social occasion—lunches are seldom quick and suppers can last for hours. Where you sit matters in the country. Before you get seated, look for place cards, or wait until the host seats you. And you must say "enjoy your meal" before you leave the table.
DRINKING MANNERS
America: If you empty a bottle into someone's glass, it obliges that person to buy the next bottle. It's polite to put the last drops into your own glass.
Australia: In a pub it' s usual to buy a round of drinks for everyone in your group. When it' s your turn, say "It's my round". When it's their round, they will buy it for you. Don't leave before you've bought a round.
Japan: Don't fill your own glass of alcohol. Instead, you should pour for others and wait for them to do it for you.
58. When you are at table in Mexico, you should .

What do you do in a situation like this? You're calling dinner with friends at a nice restaurant. You're having a great time when a phone rings at the table next to you. A man takes out his phone and starts talking loudly about problems he's having with his girlfriend. He talks for almost ten minutes! This happens all the time—on buses, in restaurants, everywhere!
Many people find cell phones useful in their daily lives. But we've all sat next to someone talking too loudly on a cell phone. You may want to tell the loudmouth to end the conversation, but let the management take care of those noisy customers. You can only control your own behavior. Here are a few rules:
Off means off! Follow the rules of restaurants and other public places. If a sign says "turn off cell phones", don't use your phone. If you are allowed, speak softly and for a short time and try to move away from other people.
Lights off, phone off! Never make calls in a theater or at the movies.
Pay attention! Talking on a cell phone while driving is dangerous. And watch where you're going when you're walking down the streets and talking on the phone.
As more people use cell phones, things are only going to get worse. So, the next time you're getting ready to make a call, stop and consider the people around you.
62. The man talking on the cell phone loudly in the restaurant will .
A. talk for half an hour B. pay more for his meal
C. make other customers angry D. be driven out by the boss

65. From the passage we can infer(推断) that .

B. public manners play an important role in our life
C. cell phones lead to people's bad relationship
D. people ought to turn cell phones off in a public places

Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives.
There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.
The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
66. According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food?
A. Those who often do sports.
B. Those who often watch television.
C. Those who often have meals at home.
D. Those who often walk to school.
67. The author thinks that children are becoming overweight because .
A. they can't choose what to eat
B. they are too busy to go out and play
C. their parents often cook meals for them
D. there are too many fast food shops around
68. The word "steering" underlined in the last sentence most probably means .
A. forcing B. guiding C. driving D. moving
69. The main purpose of the text is to .
A. tell a story B. provide facts
C. give advice D. compare opinions
七、短文7选5(5选5等)(共5小题;共10分)
Once, two birds named Cici and Nick lived in a nest. 70. They always found excuses for not doing any work.
On a cold winter day, a strong wind was blowing. 71. By chance, a hole was made in their nest(巢). The cold wind blew in through the hole and got away the warmth from the nest. Both the birds started feeling cold. Nick thought, "I wonder why Cici is so lazy? Why is she not repairing the hole?"
On the other hand, Cici thought that Nick would fill the hole. Both of them were depending on each other. 72.
Soon snow started to fall and the wind nearly blew off the last warm air from the inside of their nest. The snowflakes entered the nest through the hole. The lazy birds started shivering(颤) with cold. 73.
In the morning both the birds were dead in their nest. They had shivered to death but because of laziness they had not got up to repair the hole.
Life is the same. Some people never get success. 74. Do you think so?
A. Because their laziness blows out the chances.
B. But no one was active enough to work.
C. Both of them were very lazy.
D. There was some snowfall too.
E. So no one repaired the hole.

Two years ago, Russian newspapers published a dramatic story about Leonid Stadnik. The man suffers from his own height: he is 257 centimeters tall. He is the tallest man in the world and he is still growing.
He lives in his house in a small Ukrainian village. The man has to make quite an effort to be able to enter the house. He is almost twice as high as the doorway. The shoes that Leonid wears are 62 centimeters long. It is very hard for him to walk and even to move. Leonid can hardly control his own legs. When he walks, he needs to hold on to something—it could be a tree or the roof of his house.
The giant is now a proud owner of two king size beds—the presents from local entrepreneurs(企业家). Last year Leonid welcomed the delegation(代表团) of Belgian shoe-makers. They brought many pairs of custom-made shoes and many pairs of two-meter-long shoelaces (鞋带). The old pair of worn-out shoes worn by the tallest man in the world was sold on the Internet for 2,500 euros(欧元). The profit was used to buy sweets, biscuits and other foodstuffs for children who suffered from the Chernobyl(切尔诺贝利) disaster.
A telecommunication company presented Leonid with a computer at the beginning of the New Year. The PC has become the man's best friend in life. The Internet has become extremely important for this giant. That is because the World Wide Web is the only chance for the man to see the world and make friends.
