Passage 1Martin Luther King was a black minister, who became a great leader of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s.King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. When he was young, he was strongly influenced by Thoreau and Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi's idea of non-violent resistance. Having received a Ph. D (Doctor of Philosophy) from Boston University, he became a political and religious leader of the non-violent civil relights movement in 1955. On August 28, 1963, he led over 250,000 Americans on a march in Washington D.C. to fight for the Civil Rights Law to guarantee equality for all people, and delivered his best known speech I Have a Dream before the Lincoln Memorial. The dream is a dream of brotherly love and equality for the Black and White. Thus, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace in 1964, but he was murdered four years later.Though he died, he was greatly respected and loved by the Americans, both the white and the black. By vote of Congress in 1968, the third Monday of every January is now a federal holiday in Luther King's honor. He lives in people's hearts forever.(1)、Martin Luther King was murdered when he was 39 years old.

In a farm family, parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Often, too, uncles and aunts lived nearby. But when industry became more important than agriculture in American life, families became smaller because industry requires workers who are ready and able to move off the land and to move again whenever necessary. And large families cannot be moved from place to place as smaller families can. So, at present people tend to have smaller families. In the future, because of industrialization, a typical family will be required to move even more often than now,

问题 11 Passage 3There are about 58 million left-behind children in rural China and over 40 million of them are under 14 years old, according to a report concerning the status of the left-behind children released by the All-China Women’s Federation early this February. The report found more than half of the children left behind don’t live with either parent. The telephone is often the only way they can contact their mother or father. The report indicates that 8.7 percent left-behind children have no contact with their parents at all. The survey also found 49.7 percent of left-behind children prefer to live with their parents, and 44.1 percent of left-behind children do not want to live with their parents. 24.2 percent of left-behind children do not speak much with their caregiver.Since most of these children are at a critical stage of development, experts fear that they may develop psychological problems stemming from their parents’ absences.Sun Yunxiao, a youth expert with the China Youth Research Centre said: “The younger the child is, the more family care the child requires. Intimate family care is indispensable to every child's growth. The biggest risk for left-behind children is that they lack family intimacy. They need good care and instructions in their everyday lives, including emotional support, study help and recreational time.” Many provinces in China have now set up special schools to care for these children. Some provinces have also established charity funds for their future development. But experts add that with the numbers of left-behind children rising rapidly, more efforts will be needed by schools, society and rural families to care for children in China's rural areas.1. 问题 16 Passage 4It has been reported that in colleges across the United States, the daytime serial drama known as the soap opera has suddenly become in. Between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4:30 pm, college television lounges are filled with soap opera fans who can't wait to see the next episode in the lives of their favorite characters.Actually, soaps are more than a college favorite; they're a youth favorite. When school is out, high-school students are in front of their TV sets. One young working woman admitted that she turned down a higher paying job rather than give up watching her favorite serials. During the 1960's, it was uncommon for young people to watch soap operas. The mood of the sixties was very different from now. It was a time of seriousness, and talk was about social issues of great importance. Now, seriousness has been replaced by fun. Young people want to be happy. It may seem strange that they should turn to soap opera, which is known for showing trouble in people's lives. But soap opera is enjoyment. Young people can identify with the soap opera character, who, like the college-age viewer, is looking for happy love, and probably not finding it. 问题 26 Passage 6After retiring from 30 years of teaching, Ethell Pepper could easily have decided to sit back and relax and enjoy a peaceful retirement. But that kind of life is not for Ethell Pepper. I just wanted to do something different. If you are going to participate in life, do it. Don't

just sit down and look out of the window. She says. At 68, she decided to become one of the pioneer participants in a program at the University of California. The program offers campus housing and classes to people over sixty. She enrolled in a class called Human Relationships and a Diverse Society. I taught my minority students in my English and drama classes in high school for 20 years. But in this course, I found out a lot about other cultures that I didn't know then. One of the more important lessons that I'm learning is to perceive, not to judge. Older adults can add to the educational resources of university by bringing with them a lot of valuable experience. Their presence on campus helps break some long believes on aging. Young students may have fears of growing older. 问题 31 Passage 7My Aunt Edith was a widow of 50, working as a secretary, when doctors discovered what was then thought to be a very serious heart disease.Aunt Edith didn't accept defeat easily. She began studying medical reports in the library and found an article in a magazine about a well-known heart surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey, of Houston, Texas. He had saved the life of someone with the same disease. The article said his fees were very high; Aunt Edith couldn't possibly pay them. But could he tell her of someone whose fees she could pay?So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She simply listed her reasons for wanting to live: her three children, who would be on their own in three or four more years; her little-girl dream of traveling and seeing the world. There wasn't a word of self-pity-only warmth and humor and the joy of living. She mailed the letter, not really expecting an answer.A few days later, my doorbell rang. Aunt Edith didn't wait to come in; she stood in the hall and read aloud:A few days later, my doorbell rang. Aunt Edith didn't wait to come in; she stood in the hall and read aloud:Signed :Michael DeBakey(1)、Aunt Edith stopped working as a secretary when she knew she had a very serious heart disease.

问题 36 Passage 8 Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A person's conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives. Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing the right thing. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, You're just saying that to make me feel good. I know it's not true. It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let's not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.(1)、 What does the author try to prove by citing what kind of impression am I making? (Para. 1)__________

  答案

B:People's shyness made them care too much about their appearance and actions.
