Once while on a train, a conductor came to Morrow, asking for his ticket. He began to search his pockets. No ticket appeared. Morrow began searching his suitcase. “Never mind, sir.” Said the conductor, seeing how anxious Morrow was becoming and trying to comfort him. “When you find your ticket just post it to station. I’m sure you have it somewhere.”

“I’m sure, too.” said the diplomat as he went on with his search. “But I must find it. I need to know where I’m going!”

Another time Morrow got off a train in New York and hurried to a telegraph office, where, feeling not unlike a small boy who had got lost, he sent the following to his secretary: “I am in New York but don’t know why.” Within minutes came the short reply: “You are not supposed to be in New York. The Taj Mahal is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and the finest example of the late style of Indian architecture. It is at Agra in northern India. It lies beside the River Jumna in the middle of gardens with quiet pools.

The Taj Mahal was built by the Mogul emperor Shah Jehan, who ruled India in the seventeenth century. It is in memory of his favorite wife, Arjumand Banu Bagam, known as Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. The building, which was completed between 1632 and 1638, was designed by a local Muslim architect (建筑师) Ustad Ahmad Lahori. The whole building, with gardens and gateway structures, was completed in 1643. The Taj Mahal stands at one end of the garden tomb with marble (大理石) path. The room is softly lighted by the light that passes through double screens of carved marble set high in the walls. The building now is kept in good condition.

The Taj Mahal took 22 years to build. Shah Jehan planned a similar building, but in black instead of white, to lie on the other side of the river. But before it could be built, Shah Jehan was imprisoned by his son the buried next to his wife in the Taj Mahal.

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history.

Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the world forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.

Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.

Animals are more than just beautiful and interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.

For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(鹰), the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because Hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied quickly.

Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the government to pass laws protecting animals in danger.

Quite a few countries have pass laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animals or plants on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

51. Animals are important to us mainly because ______.

A. they give us a source of food.

B. they are beautiful and lovely

C. they keep the balance of nature

D. they give us a lot of pleasure

52. What has happened to the animals on the earth?

A. Hundreds of kinds of animals have disappeared forever.

B. Many kinds of animals have died out.

C. About 170 kinds of animals have disappeared forever.

D. All kinds of animals are in danger.

53. The underlined word “ multiplied” may probably mean ______.

A. becoming stronger B. weaker than before

C. becoming larger in number D. eating more corps

D

Reading is not the only way to acquire knowledge of preceding work. There is another large reservoir which may be called experience, and the college student will find that every craftsman(工匠) has something he can teach and will generally teach gladly to any college student who does not look down upon them with ill-concealed contempt(拙劣的藐视). The information from these quarters(出处) differs from that in textbook and papers chiefly in that its theoretical part the explanations of why things happen is frequently quite fantastic. But the demonstration and report of what happens and how it happens, are sound even if the reports are in completely unscientific terms. Presently the college students will learn, in this case also, what to accept and what to reject. One important thing for a college student to remember is that if Aristotle could talk to the fisherman, so can he.

Another source of knowledge is the vast store of traditional practices handed down from father to son, or mother to daughter, of country customs, or folklore. All this is very difficult for a college student to explore, for much knowledge and personal experience is needed here to separate good plants from wild weeds. The college student should learn to realize and remember how much of real value science has found in this wide, confused wilderness and how often scientific discoveries turned out to be rediscoveries; of what had existed in this wilderness long ago.

54. What can we learn from paragraph 1?

A. The knowledge from craftsman is not so good as that in the textbooks because it is unscientific.

B. The knowledge from craftsman sometimes lacks unscientific terms, but it is also important to acquire.

C. Craftsmen have nothing to teach because they are not college students themselves.

D. Craftsmen are looked down upon by college students because they never go to learn from them.

55. We can infer from the passage that______

A. to separate good plants from wild weeds needs knowledge and personal experience

B. craftsman's experience is usually unscientific

C. college students should learn what to accept and what to reject

D. college students should get some personal experience from traditional practices

56. In the last sentence of the passage, "in this wide, confused wilderness" refers to______

A. personal experience B. wild weeds among good plants

C. the vast store of traditional practices D. the information from the parents

57. The main idea of the passage is about______

A. what to learn from the parents B. how to acquire knowledge

C. why to learn from craftsman D. how to deal with experience
