The film that I pick is “My Mother's Castle”. This film is a sequel to “My Father's Glory”. It is about the childhood recollections of a boy called Marcel. From this film, I get a good image of an idealized portrait of a happy childhood.

The story is happened in the hills of Provence. It is similar to the first film “My Father's Glory”. In this film Marcel grows one year older than the last film and he is now aware of girls. The characters in this film is similar to the first one. Marcel is the son of this family. He is around 13 years old. His father is a schoolteacher called Joseph. His mother is a seamstress called Augustine. This family going back to Provence for their summer vacation every summer. As it shows, once again Marcel explores the adventures during his holiday. Lili is one of the

main character in the first film, he is Marcel’s old friend. Lili also shows on the screen in this film. In this film there is a new character. She is a girl and she seems to be a princess of Marcel’s

mind. She begins playfully treating Marcel as slave. And then she disappears. In the main part of the film, the family walk across the backyards in order to get to their cottage. And finally they are discovered.

According to the description of the film, there are some impressed movement. At the beginning Marcel miss the summer time in class. In this way it shows how happy he is in the country during summer. They plan live for their holiday, the family are busy and happy. In the film the family walk across the backyard, it’s dangerous. And everyone in the family help each other. In this way it shows love between the family members. When Marcel feels sad and his mother comforts him. It shows how sweet and nice his mother is. Last but not least, at the end

of the film, we see tear in the mother’s eyes and smile on her face. I am totally moved by this scene. I am totally moved by love of this family

According to the linguistic part of this film, similar to the first film, I think it is not hard to understand the dialogue between Marcel and his parents. I am not relay on the subtitles a lot. I can understand the greeting when they greet each other in school or meet strangers. In the film father bring the map and show how they can go to their cottage. I can understand the direction he is talking about. And I can separate different tense when they are talking. Such as Marcel use past tense to tell Lili about what happens about the girl. And use future tense to tell what he is willing to do or going to do. Another linguistic part I would like to share is one sentence that I like. At the beginning of the film, when the teacher asks Marcel come to the office. There is a simple dialogue between the different teachers and Marcel. “c’est lui” “c’est vous?” “c’est toi” “c’est moi?” There are different pronouns in French. From the story we can understand which refer to who.

According to the content analysis, it brings me some culture of France as well in this film. In China, as recently China has one child policy. We only can have one child in each family. And in China, children really need to respect their parents. Children are protected by their parents too much. As in this film, we see French family, the children help to prepare for travelling. Older brother helps the younger to across the road. Children is more individual in France rather than China. I think both American and French people do a good job in educating their children.

I like this film a lot and I get moved by the love in this family. It is an awesome film.
