existence;andhadlivednearlytwenty-oneyearsintheworldwithverylittletodistressorvexher.Shewastheyoungestofthetwodaughtersofamostaffectionate,indulgentfather,andhad,in

consequenceofhersister’smarriage,beenmistressofhishousefromaveryearlyperiod.Hermotherhaddiedtoolongagoforhertohavemorethananindistinctremembranceofhercaresses,andherplacehadbeensuppliedbyanexcellentwomanasgoverness,whohadfallenlittleshortofamotherinaffection.

Theeventhadeverypromiseofhappinessforherfriend.Mr.Westonwasamanofunexceptionablecharacter,easyfortune,suitableageandpleasantmanners;andtherewassomesatisfactioninconsideringwithwhatself-denying,generous

friendshipshehadalwayswishedandpromotedthematch;butitwasablackmorning’sworkforher.ThewantofMissTaylorwouldbefelteveryhourofeveryday.Sherecalledherpastkindness—the
