At 16 I went to Amherst College in Massachusetts. The tuition and cost of residence was double what my father earned in a year. The only reason I could go was that I had a scholarship. To keep it, I had to be in the top 20 percent of the class.

In my second year, I got a letter from my girlfriend, telling me she had met another guy. I was beside myself. I drove to Toronto and tried to win her back. But she was infatuated.

Devastated, I limped back to college. By midterms my grades weren’t looking good. I called my father. “Dad, I might not be able to hang on to my scholarship.”

My father said, “David, I’ll do everything I can to keep you in school. But you’ve got to be able to look me in the eye and say “I did my best.’ ” He knew I hadn’t.

It was humbling. I sat down and cracked the books. My grades went up and I kept the scholarship. I graduated from university with honors.

Section B

Passage One

Most young married couples in the United States share their duties and responsibilities both inside and outside the home. The reason for this is that they both usually have a job. Most of the young married people have to work in order to plan for their future years. For example, some people might plan for a comfortable home, some others may plan for a family and their children’s education, and still some others may generally want to save for a better living.

Since a woman helps financially, a man feels that he should help his wife in the home. He may help her with the cleaning by lifting heavy furniture. Also, he may often wash and dry the dinner dishes, because his wife has to take care of the children. This usually surprises people of other cultures, because they consider it beneath the dignity of a man to help his wife, or in other words, a man shouldn’t do a woman’s job. In American life, however, this is just another way of showing respect that men and women have for each other.

Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. Why do young American couples share their duties both inside and outside the home?

27. What is the reason why a man feels the necessity to help his wife with housework?

28. What’s the Americans’ opinion of men’s sharing women’s duties at home?

Passage Two

Do you have a tough math test coming up? Then listen to some classical piano music just before the test. You might come up with a higher score. Researchers at a university in California conducted an experiment. They asked a group of college students to listen to some piano music by a famous 18th century composer before taking a math test. They were surprised to find that the students’ scores jumped 8 to 9 points. The music seems to excite nerve activities in the brain; similar to the activity that occurs when a person is figuring out a math problem. However, the scientists warn before you get too excited about applying this method to your math test, you should remember that brain exciting effects last only 10 or 15 minutes. Would rock music work as well as the piano music did? No, the scientists say. In fact, the less complex music might even interfere with the brains reasoning ability.

Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard.

29. What is this passage mainly about?

30. Why can classical music play a positive role in problem solving?

31. What is one of the findings of the research?

Passage Three

An elderly woman yesterday made a legal claim against a department store because it had wrongly accused her of stealing a Christmas card. Ms. Doss white, 72 years old, is claiming $ 3000 damages from the store for wrongful arrest and false imprisonment. Ms. White visited the store while doing Christmas shopping, but did not buy anything. She was followed through the town by a store manager. He had been told that a customer saw her take a card and put it in her
