There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water his flowers, he used two buckets(水桶). One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.

Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled. The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path.

Sometimes the new bucket would say, “See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day! I don't know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are!”

And all that the old bucket could say was“I know I am not very useful, but I can only do my best. I am happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me, at least.”

One day, the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual, he said, “You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back, I want you to look carefully along the path.”

Then the two buckets did so. All along the path, they noticed, on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare earth; on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.

Most people pay attention to body language. They shake hands and make eye contact when they meet people for the first time. Among very good friends, a woman may give another woman a little hug, and a man may kiss a woman quickly on the cheek.

When people are waiting in a public place, such as the post office, they usually form lines. Some people get angry and complain if someone pushes their way into a line or jumps ahead of other people. Moreover, many women like men to open doors for them. They also like men to give up their seats on public transportation. However, some women do not like this type of behavior. They feel that men and women should be treated in the same way.

In the United States, it’s important to make direct eye contact in business and social situations. If you don’t make eye contact, people will probably think that you are bored or not interested. If there is silence in these situations, people usually try to make conservation. Periods of silence make many people uncomfortable. People in the United States usually stand about one arm’s length away from each other while talking or standing together. This space is called “the comfort zone”.

In the United States, mothers sometimes show that they are angry with children by shaking an index finger at them. People may show that they like children by patting them on the top of the head.

25. Some women don’t like to be offered a seat by men because _______.

  A. they like to be treated equally            B. they prefer to stand rather than sit

C. they think sitting is harmful for health.     D. they don’t need men’s favor

  A. body language in public places          B. impolite body language

Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.

He reported the case to the police and then sat therelost and lonely in strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.

Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath.

My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend.

That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way.

Carbon monoxide(一氧化碳) poisoning kills and injures many people and animals around the world. The gas has been a problem since people first began burning fuels to cook food or to create heat. It is a problem in all parts of the world that experience cold weather.

Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because people do not know it is in the air. The gas has no color. It has no taste. It has no smell. It does not cause burning eyes. And it does not cause people to cough. But it is very deadly. It robs the body of its ability to use oxygen.

Carbon monoxide decreases the ability of the blood to carry oxygen to body tissues. It does this by linking with the blood. When the gas links with the blood, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen to the tissues that need it.

Damage to the body can begin very quickly from large amounts of carbon monoxide. How quickly this happens depends on the length of time a person is breathing the gas and the amount of the gas he or she breathes in.

Carbon monoxide poisoning has warning signs. But people have to be awake to recognize them. Small amounts of the gas will cause a person's head to hurt. He or she may begin to feel tired. The person may feel sick. The room may appear to be turning around. The person may have trouble thinking clearly. People develop severe head pains as the amount of the gas continues to enter their blood. They will begin to feel very tired and sleepy. They may have terrible stomach pains.

Medical experts say carbon monoxide affects people differently. For example, a small child will experience health problems or die much quicker than an adult will. The general health of the person or his or her age can also be important. An older adult with health problems may suffer the effects of carbon monoxide more quickly than a younger person with no health problems. People with heart disease may suffer chest pains. They may begin to have trouble breathing.

32. Why is carbon monoxide called the silent killer?

A.Because it tastes and smells good.   B.Because it is not easily noticed.

C.Because it kills and injures people.    D.Because it always harms people.

33. How does carbon monoxide harm people?

A.It makes people's blood unable to move.

B.It decreases the amount of blood in the body.

C.It makes body tissues full of blood.

D.It makes the blood less able to carry oxygen.

34. When people breathe in small amounts of the gas, they may________.

 A.feel a little dizzy   B.suffer a severe headache

C.go around in the room             D.have a terrible stomachache

35. Which of the following about carbon monoxide poisoning is true?

A.Adults are affected more seriously than children.

B.Young people are more severely affected than old people.

C.People in poor health may have severer consequences.

D.People with heart problems only suffer from chest pains.

四.书面表达:

We middle school students have had many tests or exams. We have both achieved success and suffered from failure. Different students take different attitudes to failure.

Some fall in low spirits when they don’t do well in the exams. They usually lose heart and no longer study as hard as before. But most students take an active attitude towards failure. They encourage themselves to be selfconfident. They analyze and find out the causes so that they will no longer make similar mistakes.

I agree with those with active attitudes. As we all knowfailure is the mother of success. Even great men may have failed many times before they succeeded. So in my opinionit’s not important whether we succeed or not. What matters much is what attitudes we should take. We must deal with our failure correctly.
