What is SDL Trados Studio 2014?

SDL Trados Studio 2014 (Studio 2014) is the latest version of the SDL Trados Studio product family, evolving the innovative SDL Trados Studio 2011 with new capabilities to enhance user experience, translation and project management needs.

When is the official launch of SDL Trados Studio 2014?

SDL Trados Studio 2014 is not available yet, however, if you purchase a copy of the product now you will receive SDL Trados Studio 2011. When Studio 2014 is officially launched in a few weeks, you will be entitled to a free upgrade.

I’ve just bought Studio 2011. Do I have to buy Studio 2014?

If you have purchased SDL Trados Studio 2011, and have an active support and maintenance contract (PSMA) at the time of purchase, you are entitled to a free upgrade to Studio 2014.

If you don’t have an active PSMA you are not entitled to a free upgrade to Studio 2014. You can upgrade to Studio 2014 for an upgrade cost. Upgrade options will be available after the official launch.

stHowever, if you have just recently purchased SDL Trados Studio 2011, after 1 July 2013, SDL will be delighted to offer you a free upgrade to Studio 2014 when it arrives.

Does the release of Studio 2014 have any impact of any other versions of SDL

Trados Studio?

SDL Trados 2007 Suite, SDL Trados Studio 2009 and SDL Trados Studio 2011 will no longer be available for sale after the official launch of Studio 2014. Existing customers of SDL Trados 2007 Suite or SDL Trados Studio 2009 and SDL Trados Studio 2011 will be able to continue to use SDL Trados 2007 Suite which they already own. When purchasing a full license of SDL Trados Studio 2014 or an upgrade to SDL Trados Studio 2014, SDL Trados 2007 suite will not be included in the Studio 2014 package.

stYou will be able to upgrade to Studio 2014 from SDL Trados 2007 Suite (until 31 December

2013), SDL Trados Studio 2009 and SDL Trados Studio 2011. You can upgrade immediately and you will be the first to receive the new version when it is launched.

Why should I upgrade?

SDL Trados Studio continues to evolve as a translation platform, designed to extend translation into many other applications. Studio 2014 brings many new fantastic features which significantly increase translation speed, make SDL Trados Studio easier to use, improves work within the whole supply chain and allows for integrations with third party systems. More information will be available on our website.

Is SDL Trados Studio 2014 compatible with previous versions?

Yes of course! SDL Trados Studio 2014 is fully compatible with SDL Trados Studio 2011 and SDL Trados Studio 2009. Furthermore SDL Trados Studio 2014 will enable you to open TTX, ITD files and old Trados Word bilingual files as well as use translation memories from older versions of SDL Trados. It also features support for industry standards such as TMX (for translation memories), TBX (for terminology databases) and also XLIFF (as a file format for translation). Extended file type support is available via SDL OpenExchange for third party file formats such as Wordfast.

Can you save old translation memory formats within SDL Trados Studio 2014?

You will still be able to save TTX files which can be used to update legacy translation memory

formats. You can also export the native Studio translation memory format (SDLTM) into a TMX file format, which can then be imported into older versions of SDL Trados. You can also use the SDXLIFF to Legacy app, which is a free app available on OpenExchange, which enables for converting to legacy file formats.

Can I work with my SDL Trados Studio 2014 Freelance license on a network?

SDL Trados Studio 2014 Freelance Edition is for personal use and will work on a workgroup-based network (such as a home wireless network), but cannot be used on domain-based

networks. If you wish to work on both workgroup and domain-based networks, then you will need to purchase SDL Trados Studio Professional. Why should I invest in Studio 2014?

A workgroup-based network (also known as a 'peer-to-peer' network) is two or more computers that are networked together. No one machine is in charge, and security and other settings have to be made on each individual computer.

A domain-based network is where networked computers (either servers or clients) have a

hierarchy. Security settings are determined on the domain controllers (servers) and each machine (client) is authenticated by a server when logging on.

What are the differences between the Freelance and Professional edition?

SDL Trados Studio is available in three different versions: Starter, Freelance and Professional. The reason behind having separate versions is that freelance translators do not usually require all the functionality within the full Professional license. The additional features in the Professional version include:

o Ability to work on a network: Our Professional version is network enabled and can be used

on a domain controlled network.

o AutoSuggest creation: Dictionary creation with the revolutionary new AutoSuggest feature

only exists within the Professional version. The Freelance version will enable translators to open and use AutoSuggest dictionaries, but they will not be able to create them unless

they purchase the AutoSuggest Creator add-on.

o Automated project preparation and distribution through SDL Package technology: Create

and distribute projects with SDL Package technology - you can only open and return

packages in the Freelance version. Please note that it is possible to create projects in the Freelance version, but the SDL Package technology and customized task sequencing are available only in the Professional version.

o Unlimited language support: Work with as many languages as you want - the Freelance

version supports up to 5 languages (which are selected upon installation).

o SDL PerfectMatch 2.0: Create PerfectMatches (in-context 100% matches) by leveraging

your previously translated bilingual files. Users on the Freelance edition will be able to use PerfectMatch, but not create them.

Can I have both SDL Trados Studio and SDL Trados 2007 Suite installed on the same PC? Yes you can install both Studio and Suite on the same PC.

What are the system requirements for SDL Trados Studio 2014?

SDL Trados Studio supports Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. As a minimum requirement, we recommend a Pentium IV-based computer with 1 GB RAM and a screen resolution of 1280x1024. For optimum performance, we recommend 2 GB RAM and a more recent Pentium or compatible processor.
