of the University of Sussex is threatened with closure. The university can’t afford to keep it.
“Here we have one of our major departments which is closing, which will, has got 350 applicants to do its chemistry courses this year. And you really have to say is this compatible with trying to make sure that you’ve got a capacity within our science base in order to train tomorrow’s teachers, and in order, for instance, to be able to train tomorrow’s researchers.”
It’of another leading college. Last year, Exeter University announced its chemistry department would close. It’s the start, critics say, of a collapse of science (and ) higher education
“What we need is injection of money now, to bring about a position where we don’t see a further deterioration, so that some areas of the country will be almost without chemistry and indeed physics and other subjects. We need injection now in order that the investment they are making longer term can bear fruit.
“In his latest budget, Gordon Brown promised an extra billion pounds of research and development over the next 3 years. It’s all part of a scheme to boost spending on science, maths, and engineering over the next decade. About time, say British scientists, they are tired of trailing the USA, and who devotes 3.1 percent of its economy to ’s not just money the university science departments are lacking. Numbers of students with A levels in science and maths have been falling for years. Again in his budget Gordon Brown promised to fix 3000 more science teachers. But they take time to train, their pupils even longer to make it through to university.
“The issue is what do we do now to stop more and more chemistry, physics, mathematics departments closing. If there is a hemorrhage there, then there won’t be the departments for these school students to go to in 5, 10 years’ time.”
If nothing changes, more universities will join Sussex and Exeter in emptying out their labs, leaving Britain’s future scientists fewer outlets for their potential.

Study: Fast-paced TV cartoons reduce kids’ learning
Speed and unrealistic situations affect preschoolers
A new study finds that (1)young children have difficulty learning immediately after watching fast-paced television cartoons full of images and activities that are not possible in real life. It’s what some people are calling the “SpongeBob effect.”
2013年大学英语6级答案
“SpongeBob SquarePants” is a cartoon character whose surreal and improbable undersea adventures are watched by children around the world.
University of Virginia researchers wanted to find out whether watching “SpongeBob” affected kids’ ability to learn immediately after seeing the show.
To find out, a group of four-year-old children watched either a short video of “SpongeBob,” or a slower-paced and more realistic animated show called “Caillou.”
A third group of children spent time drawing instead of watching television.
Afterward, explains researcher Angeline Lillard, they all took standardized tests designed to measure their (2)ability to concentrate, learn, and solve problems - what psychologists call “executive function.”
“And what we found is that children who had been in the “SpongeBob” group were performing only about half as well as the other children. So they were at about 50 percent capacity.”
The four-year-olds in this study are at a critical age, when the prefrontal cortex is still developing. That is the part of the brain where (3)problem-solving and related functions are located.
Lillard says one reason why a show like “SpongeBob SquarePants” might affect learning is its combination of speed and content.
“It’s fast-paced and it’s fantastical. So the child is needing to process all this new stuff really, really fast, and it’s difficult to process since(4) it doesn’t really happen in real life.”
Lillard cautions that her study looked only at how young children learned immediately after watching the TV shows, so she cannot say (5)whether watching these kinds of programs have a permanent effect on learning.
“But I would say that parents might want to think about when children watch such shows and perhaps how frequently they watch them as well because they are certainly compromised immediately afterwards.”
Lillard’s study is published in the journal Pediatrics.
